California
San Diego Accounts Service (which does business as California Accounts Service) is on the receiving end of a proposed class action lawsuit alleging it violated federal debt collection law by failing to clearly communicate the amount of a consumer’s purported debt. According to the complaint, the defendant sent the plaintiff a collection letter that informed him he owed $77.49. The suit argues, however, that the letter was “completely devoid” of any mention of additional fees – such as interest, late fees, or other charges – that would cause the balance to increase. As a result, the case claims, the plaintiff was left unaware as to how much he truly owed since the defendant was allegedly adding to his balance daily.
