Rankin v. General Motors LLC
Filed: December 11, 2020 ◆§ 2:20-cv-13279
GM faces another proposed class action alleging the lithium ion batteries in 2017-2019 model year Chevy Bolt vehicles can suddenly catch fire when fully or close to fully charged.
A $150 million Chevy Bolt settlement with General Motors and LG was granted preliminary approval by the court on September 26, 2024, bringing consumers closer to receiving compensation over claims that more than 100,000 of the electric vehicles suffer from a lithium ion battery defect.

After years of litigation, the class action settlement, which now awaits final court approval, will provide relief to consumers harmed economically by the alleged Chevy Bolt battery defect, which can reportedly cause a vehicle’s battery to spontaneously catch fire, even when the car is off, parked and not being charged.
The official Chevy Bolt settlement website can be found at BoltEVBatterySettlement.com.
According to United States District Judge Terrence G. Berg’s 22-page approval order, notice of the Chevy Bolt settlement will be mailed to eligible class members—i.e., owners and lessees of a 2017-2022 model year Bolt who have not received a buyback from GM or an authorized dealer—within 60 days of the deal’s preliminary approval.

The document says that the official Chevy Bolt settlement website contains details about the class action lawsuit and $150 million deal, including when drivers might receive a Chevy Bolt settlement payout. The website also includes a claim form consumers can use to file a claim for a Chevy Bolt settlement rebate online or by mail.
Court documents relay that the vehicles at issue are now eligible for “final recall remedies”— that is, certain software upgrades or the installation of an advanced replacement battery. In addition, class members may receive minimum cash payments between $700 and $1,400 if the settlement is ultimately approved.
The parties now await a hearing scheduled for March 25, 2025, during which Judge Berg will decide whether to grant final approval to the terms of the Chevy Bolt settlement.
