- A judge has granted preliminary approval to a settlement that will provide eligible Lenovo Yoga laptop users with free repairs, $100 cash or refunds for repair costs.
The deal, which was preliminarily approved by the court on April 10, 2023, covers all consumers who currently possess certain Lenovo Yoga 730 and Flex 5 laptops purchased in the United States for personal or business use and not for resale.
According to court documents, eligible consumers can receive free Lenovo Yoga laptop repairs within a certain timeframe, $100 cash, or a refund of the amount spent on repairing their laptop, whichever is less.
Based on data Lenovo has provided to the settlement administrator, at least 80 percent of consumers covered by the settlement will receive direct notice about the deal via mail and/or email, court documents state.

- Court documents indicate that a settlement is in the works to potentially resolve two proposed class action lawsuits filed over Lenovo’s Flex 5, also known as the Yoga 520, and the Yoga 730 laptops. After engaging in private mediation, parties involved in the litigation “agreed to a tentative settlement agreement,” a February 28 letter reads. Multiple drafts of the settlement agreement have since been exchanged and the parties “believe they are close to finalizing” a deal, court documents say.

A class action lawsuit is alleging Lenovo Yoga 520 and 730 laptops may have a defect that causes the touch screens to flicker, freeze, or turn black.
According to the case, when the laptops are folded all the way over into tablet mode, the cable connecting the screen to the rest of the computer becomes stressed and can fray or break, rendering the screen unusable.
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org have opened their own investigation into Lenovo Yoga laptops with the intent to file more lawsuits.
Class Action Claims Lenovo Yoga Laptops Are Defective
According to the lawsuit, Lenovo Yoga 520 (also known as Flex 5) and 730 laptops were advertised as “2-in-1” devices with touchscreens that could be folded against the back of the computer to function as a tablet.
The case claims, however, that folding the laptops in this way puts stress on the cable connecting the screen to the rest of the computer and can damage the connection over time. Customers have reported that the screens on their Lenovo Yoga devices have started to flicker, freeze, black out, or display other visual problems during ordinary use — sometimes only days or weeks after purchase.
The lawsuit alleges the laptops have an inherent defect that eventually renders the devices unusable, forcing consumers to buy a new laptop or pay for repairs.
Consumer Complaints Regarding Lenovo Yoga Laptops
Below is a sampling of online complaints from users who experienced flickering, freezing, blacking out, and other visual problems with their Lenovo Yoga screens [sic throughout]:
My ~2 week old Lenovo Flex 5’s screen started to flicker a few days ago and the issue has become progressively worse since then to a point where most of the screen is covered by black flickering at times. The computer starts fine, but when the computer is moved and especially when the screen is moved up or down the flickering appears…”

I have the exact same problem. My issue occurs mostly when i just turn the laptop on but once i start using it its fine. It does flicker when i move the screen and overtime its gotten worse when i first pull open the laptop…”
— iusamaymb, forums.lenovo.com
A couple months after purchasing this laptop, the same screen issues reported online by other people have started. The screen flickers and distorts almost like a bad signal when a cable comes loose. Horrible for a laptop that has seen very light use from my wife for less than 3 months.”

An otherwise great laptop. After 2 months of use the screen totally stopped working. Do a Google search and you’ll see all kinds of screen problems, and the response from Lenovo usually is to update your software, drivers, etc. Glad I got Geek Squad services up front, but we’ll be without a computer for 2 weeks. The whole reason I went with Lenovo, after using them at work for years, is to avoid all this. This product line seems to be a lemon.”
