Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed over a potential defect in the forward collision warning (FCW) system in certain Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee vehicles.
Specifically, drivers of newer Cherokees and Grand Cherokees have reported that the vehicles’ FCW system—a safety feature that issues a warning light if the sensors detect a potential frontal impact and automatically engages the brakes if the driver does not respond—does not activate in situations when it should. Some drivers have said they have narrowly avoided collisions or have rear-ended other vehicles due to the FCW system’s automatic braking not working. Other drivers have said their uncertainty about whether their vehicle’s collision avoidance system was working properly caused them to fear for their safety.

Driver Complaints: Forward Collision Warning, Braking Not Working
Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee drivers have complained in online forums about problems with their vehicles’ forward collision warning system.
At times, drivers have received dashboard warnings that the FCW system was unavailable or had limited functionality. Others were concerned that the critical crash sensor system was off or not working properly because it never seemed to activate, even when they had nearly experienced a collision.
According to some complaints, drivers who brought their Cherokees and Grand Cherokees in for repairs were told by dealers that the FCW system could not be tested due to safety concerns.
Below is a sampling of complaints from Jeep drivers about the FCW system [sic throughout]:
I have a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Summit purchased 12/3/2022 and built 11/2022 with all the features and Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking activated with ‘far’ as the detection range option. I easily tested it using a very large roll of paper 5 feet high strung out about 15 feet in a parking lot going 40 mph. Nothing at all happened. No warning, no stopping, no braking. My local dealership service guys say they find nothing wrong in the programming and software or the sensors. It just does NOT work. I guess we will have to wait until enough people get in wrecks, get injured or die, for Jeep to fix this.”

My wife has a 2022 grand Cherokee summit reserve, we have had a few close calls without any help / notification from system. Tried near, med, and far on selection. Today was the closest call, a vehicle in front suddenly stopped, system did nothing, luckily I was driving and was able to stop in time. Came too close for comfort. We used to have a 2014 summit grand Cherokee and that system worked flawlessly, coming on numerous times at a less challenging experience”

I can confirm it dosent work. My previous vehicles I’d get a warning at least once a week, and an actual brake application a couple times. this Jeep in the same conditions hasn’t even alerted a warning and there are plenty situations it should have.”

I’m also experiencing this issue with my new Grand Cherokee 2023 L. The ACC works fine, but the forward collision warning is definitely not working. I took it back to the dealership and they told me that it’s too dangerous to test, but that it’s working fine.”

I never even thought to think about the FCW system on my 22 Summit, just assumed it would work when needed. Well, it failed to engage last Saturday night and I rear ended another car. The car in front of me slammed on her brakes because of the car in front of her decide to slam on his brakes at a green light for no apparent reason and then take off, she hit him and I hit her. I had several people in the car and none of them heard or felt the warning system activate.”

Over the last month since I got a Grand Cherokee 2022 Summit Reserve, I also almost got into 2 accidents in situations where my previos 2018 Cherokee would have engaged the forward collision avoidance brakes. The car simply failed to acknowledge that I was about to rear-end a car that slammed it’s brakes or T-bone another car that crossed my path. I have yet to take it to service, but I didn’t see any messages or warnings come up. It is scary thinking that a safety system is there but it actually isn’t functioning.”

I am 100% sure now that the front pedestrian detection and auto braking doesn’t work as it should. My wife had a near miss today while making a left turn due to the blind spot from the A pillar and almost hit a pedestrian crossing the road. Jeep didn’t even beep or apply any braking power but thank god my wife was able to stop on time.”
