Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are investigating whether a class action lawsuit can be filed against Ingenuity over several of its high chairs.
Complaints have surfaced that despite being advertised as “dishwasher safe,” the seating pads of these high chairs can warp and/or shrink after being put in the dishwasher.
It’s believed the reported issue affects the following Ingenuity products:
- SmartClean Trio 3-in-1 High Chair
- SmartClean ChairMate High Chair
- Baby Base 2-n-1 Booster Seat
If you had issues with your high chair’s seating pad shrinking or warping after putting it in the dishwasher, you may be able to get your money back.
How Could a Class Action Lawsuit Help?
A lawsuit could help people who had issues with the high chairs get their money back. It’s believed Ingenuity charged a premium price for the high chairs because the seat cushions could be put in the dishwasher. A successful case could also require Ingenuity to change the way it labels its products.
Consumer Complaints: High Chair Seating Pads Shrink, Warp, Curl
A number of Ingenuity customers have left complaints on Amazon.com about problems they experienced after putting their high chair and booster seat cushions into the dishwasher. These include [sic throughout]:
I really want to love this high chair. The features are great but I wanted to clean the dishwasher safe cushions...they are now warped. After a month of my baby using the chair they are still warped.”
— FlipFlopGirl21, Amazon.com
The dishwasher left a white film all over the foam seating and the heat from the dishwasher curled up the sides of the seating. I want to send back but I didn't put it in the dishwasher till recently and it's been too long…”

According to the description of the item, as well as the owners manual, it says the padding of the seat (back and bottom cushion) is dishwasher safe. So I tried putting ours through the dishwasher. It was washed on a regular cycle, no heated dry or anything and it curled up like crazy! I have not been able to get it back to its original shape. it gets bunched up and falls our every time because it's no longer fitted to the chair…I've changed this to a one star review because I have tried to contact customer service multiple times about replacing the pads and have yet to receive a response.”

Sooo this highchair was working great, had barley any problems with it until I was cleaning it. I placed the items in the dishwasher as it stated that I could, AND THEY SHRUNK!!!!! sooooo not sure why or what to do about it. But I think it is completely ridiculous. So I would advise against purchasing this item.”

Warning! We bought this because all of the pieces could go in the dishwasher! How nice, right? Wrong! The rubber seat part SHRUNK in the dishwasher, despite it being marketed as dishwasher safe.”
— David, Amazon.com
I was disappointed that the seat cover shrunk after I washed and dried it the first time. It is still useable but looks snug and my daughter can't see back in the chair anymore. I was disappointed.”
