Attorneys are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed after more than 281,000 Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles were recalled over a fire risk in August 2022.
A class action lawsuit, if filed and successful, could provide drivers with relief they wouldn’t get from the recall, such as payments for having a car that’s a potential safety risk and compensation for lost vehicle value.
The Recall
News outlets began reporting in late August 2022 that more than 280,000 Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride SUVs were being recalled due to a fire risk.
The fire risk is reportedly related to faulty trailer hitch wiring harnesses that can short circuit when debris collects on a circuit board inside. At least 25 incidents of fire or melting have been reported.
The automakers have admitted that they don’t have a fix yet for the issue and, in the meantime, have warned drivers to park their SUVs outside and away from buildings and other structures.
How a Class Action Could Help Drivers
It’s unclear at this point what relief will be provided through the recall, but a successful class action lawsuit could provide additional benefits to compensate drivers for their losses.
Possible relief could include payments for the inconvenience and safety hazard of owning or leasing a car that’s a fire risk, or for the amounts drivers overpaid for their cars or lost in resale value.
What Hyundai, Kia Vehicles Are at Risk of Catching Fire?
The recall over a potential fire risk includes the following vehicles:
- 2020-2022 Hyundai Palisade SUVs
- 2020-2022 Kia Telluride SUVs equipped with a Kia 4-pin tow hitch harness accessory supplied by Mobis Parts America
The two manufacturers will begin sending out recall notices in mid-October and again when a repair is ready.
How Do I Check if My Hyundai or Kia Has a Recall?
To check if your Hyundai Palisade or Kia Telluride has a recall, head over to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website and enter your SUV’s vehicle identification number (VIN).
This 17-character number can usually be found on a car’s dashboard near the windshield on the driver’s side, or on your registration or insurance card.
