Attorneys are investigating whether a lawsuit can be filed against Henkel, the maker of certain Alterna-brand hair products, for possible false advertising.
More specifically, it’s believed that the products at issue – which include items from Alterna’s Caviar Restructuring Bond Repair line, an Alterna repair booster, and an Alterna Caviar rapid repair spray – may not be capable of repairing damaged hair as advertised.
Now, the attorneys are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed against Henkel to help consumers get back some of the money they spent on the products.
Which Products Are Under Investigation?
It’s believed that Henkel may have falsely advertised the following Alterna hair repair products:
- Caviar Restructuring Bond Repair Shampoo
- Caviar Restructuring Bond Repair Conditioner
- Caviar Restructuring Bond Repair Masque
- Caviar Restructuring Bond Repair Leave-In Heat Protection Spray
- Caviar Restructuring Bond Repair Leave-In Overnight Serum
- Caviar Restructuring Bond Repair Leave-In Treatment Mousse
- Caviar Restructuring Bond Repair Leave-In Protein Cream
- Caviar Restructuring Bond Repair 3-in-1 Sealing Serum
- My Hair My Canvas Jelly Fix Repair Booster
- Caviar Professional Styling Rapid Repair Spray
It’s believed that these products – which have been advertised as able to “re-bond, rebuild and seal the hair cuticle,” provide “deep repair for brand new results,” and “revitalize” and “repair” hair, among other claims – may not be able to provide the promised results for consumers.
Can Hair Products Actually Repair Damage?
According to some sources, because hair is made up of dead cells, any damage to these cells is permanent and “beyond repair.”
In fact, a lawsuit filed against another maker of hair repair products explains that the only way to truly mend hair damage is to chemically alter the links between keratin proteins, which the suit says is not possible through the use of over-the-counter products. The case claims that hair repair products can, at most, only provide a “temporary illusion” that a user’s hair has been repaired.
For this reason, it’s believed that Alterna customers may have been misled by possible false advertising and have paid a premium price for hair repair products that cannot produce the promised results.
Customers Post Complaints Online
Some customers have posted reviews online stating that the Caviar and other Alterna hair repair products did not repair their hair or work as they expected.
A sample of complaints posted on Henkel’s Alterna Haircare website has been included below [sic throughout]:
I like this spray, but I don’t know if it does anything- it certainly does not repair. It may add a little shine but since I bought it and it’s too late to return, I honestly just use it at this point for the smell. I love the scent and it lasts on my hair for a short time after using.”

…I really saw no difference in my hair when using this booster. My hair is pretty damaged from being lightened, so it needs some love. This just didn’t do it for me. I saw no improvement in split ends, breakage, etc. This actually left my hair feeling very sticky and tangled. It provided no ‘slip’ or softening at all…”

I used this repair booster together with the my hair my canvas masque unfortunately I did not have good results. My hair was dry and frizzy. It was shinier and soft but dry and frizz…”

Smells great, lightweight, and definitely makes your hair feel clean and fresh but I didn’t notice any difference in my hair when it came to repairing damage or sealing split ends. Love Alterna but this one did not work for me. If your hair is overly damaged, might need something stronger to help.”

I had this for almost two months now but it doesn't work for my thick, damaged bleached hair. It doesn't even detangle my frizz. I even left the product in my hair more than 3 min. What's wrong?”

I got this product and it sounded like a great idea, I have been using it for about two weeks but I don't know if it is make a difference. I believe I am using it correctly as per the label instructions but I haven't notice a difference in the look or feel of my hair. My hair has always been pretty dry so maybe it takes awhile, IDK.”

How Could a Lawsuit Help?
A successful class action lawsuit could help buyers get back some of the money they spent on Alterna hair repair products. It could also force Henkel to change how the products are advertised.
