Scandal: Investigations Uncover Alleged Culture of Abuse at Glen Mills Schools
Recent investigations conducted by The Philadelphia Inquirer, other news outlets, and government organizations have uncovered an apparent “culture of violence and intimidation” at Glen Mills Schools, one of the oldest reform schools in the country.
The investigations detail reports of staff allegedly using “unreasonable force” to punish juveniles “under the guise of discipline.” The alleged abuse ranged from students being spit on to having their bones broken at the hands of staff members.
Further, the investigations claimed that Glen Mills staff attempted to cover up the abuse by intercepting students’ letters, holding them at the school beyond their commitment dates if they had noticeable injuries, and threatening to extend their sentences or have them “beat down” if they tried to report the abuse.
After looking into The Inquirer’s investigation, the state government on March 25, 2019 issued an emergency removal of all the remaining students at the school.
