Attorneys working with ClassAction.org want to hear from anyone who received a data breach letter from Enzo Clinical Labs (a division of Enzo Biochem).
Specifically, they’re investigating whether a class action lawsuit can be filed against the biotechnology company in light of a recent data breach during which patients’ personal information – including names, dates of service, clinical test information and, for some, Social Security numbers – was exposed to an unauthorized party. It’s believed that Enzo Biochem may have failed to take appropriate steps to protect patients’ sensitive data and, as a result, may have negligently put them at risk of identity theft and fraud.
The attorneys are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed against Enzo Biochem to help compensate data breach victims, but they first need to speak with more people whose information was exposed.
Enzo Biochem Data Breach: Why Did I Get a Letter?
Enzo Clinical Labs, a division of Enzo Biochem that offers laboratory testing services, reported on May 30, 2023 that it had experienced a ransomware attack on April 6 during which hackers gained access to nearly 2.5 million individuals’ personal and medical information stored on its computer systems.
The compromised information may have included current and former patients’ names, dates of service, clinical test information and, for roughly 600,000 people, Social Security numbers.
The company stated in its online data breach notice that affected patients should receive a mailed data breach letter by July 5, 2023.
You may have received a letter from Enzo Clinical Labs if you went to one of its patient service centers for blood work or if your doctor or pharmacy collected a sample from you and sent it to the lab for diagnostic testing. In that case, you may not have been aware that the test was performed at Enzo Biochem’s lab. The company offers a wide range of routine and highly specialized tests, including for COVID-19, allergies, sexually transmitted diseases and cancer.
How Could a Lawsuit Help Data Breach Victims?
A successful class action lawsuit could provide compensation for:
- Loss of privacy
- Lost time spent responding to the breach (such as monitoring accounts and addressing fraudulent uses of your information)
- Money spent addressing the breach (such as obtaining additional credit monitoring and identity theft protection services, credit reports and medical records)
- Money lost due to fraudulent charges or identity theft
- Damage to credit
A lawsuit could also force Enzo Biochem to implement better data security to ensure patients’ information is protected from future data breaches.
