Women Implanted with Recalled DePuy Hips More Likely to Need Revision
Last Updated on June 27, 2017
Reportedly, women implanted with the recalled DePuy hips may be more likely than men to experience problems requiring a corrective hip implant surgery. A report suggests that those implanted with artificial hips measuring less than 50mm in cup diameter are more likely to need a second hip replacement procedure. Therefore, female DePuy ASR recipients, who typically have a smaller stature than men, have an increased risk of needing a corrective hip replacement procedure after being implanted with a recalled DePuy ASR device.
Overall, 1 in 8 patients implanted with the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular Hip System or the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System will need revision surgery within five years, according to data from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales. The five-year revision surgery rate for the ASR Hip Resurfacing System is approximately 12%, and for the ASR XL Acetabular System, it is approximately 13%. As a result of this higher-than-expected revision surgery rate, the manufacturer issued a DePuy hip implant recall of these two products in August 2010.
Patients who were implanted with hip replacements implicated in the DePuy hip recall may be able to participate in a lawsuit to recover financial compensation.
