Merck has yanked its website dedicated to the popular hair loss drug Propecia, according to The Examiner. This action fuels speculation that more warnings about the drug’s negative side effects could possibly be issued soon. The website, www.propecia.com now states that “This Web site is not currently available” and even contains a message at the bottom saying “You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA.” The message then gives a phone number and the FDA’s medwatch website to do so.

A recent study warned that the sexual side effects associated with Propecia may be irreversible.

Propecia has been under fire in recent months, fighting claims that it knew about serious side effects but did nothing to notify consumers about them. Many lawsuits have been filed alleging that Propecia caused many users erectile dysfunction, decreased sexual desire, decreased semen, depression, and problems with orgasm. A recent study conducted by George Washington University Professor Michael S. Irwig warned that the sexual side effects associated with Propecia may be irreversible.

The FDA issued a warning last year detailing the drug’s possible link to prostate cancer but has not yet issued a warning related to potential permanent sexual side effects. The product’s label says that a limited amount of users may experience small side effects like sexual dysfunction, but that discontinuing use of the drug would cease these problems.
