Pradaxa Lawsuits Get Consolidated to One Court
Last Updated on June 27, 2017
According to reports, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) announced that they will be consolidating all of the pending Pradaxa lawsuits to one federal court. With lawyers expecting over 500 cases, the JPML’s decision is expected to speed up the legal process. Judge David Herndon, of the Southern District of Illinois, will be responsible for overseeing the litigation.
According to USA Today, the FDA had 3,781 adverse effects and 542 deaths relating to Pradaxa reported to it last year.
The JPML’s decision comes after it was requested that all of the cases be moved into one court. According to advocates of the motion, consolidating the cases will be two-fold; it will speed up the cases for the plaintiffs, as well as allow victims to share unique information with one another. Herndon is famous for accelerating resolutions to the infamous Yaz litigation. As Pradaxa lawsuits mount, all parties are hoping that Judge Herndon will be able to use his experience to reach a resolution in an efficient manner.
Pradaxa is a blood thinner that is used mainly to prevent strokes and blood clots. Since going on the market in October 2010, Pradaxa has become a blockbuster drug and was touted to replace older and more difficult-to-use anticoagulants. Lawsuits began to mount over the popular blood thinner after the FDA announced in late 2011 that they were launching an investigation into reports of internal bleeding submitted through its adverse events reporting agency. According to USA Today, the FDA had 3,781 adverse effects and 542 deaths relating to Pradaxa reported to it last year. Lawyers for the plaintiffs believe that cases will continue to mount as Pradaxa led all other prescription medications in fatalities last year.
