Carbon Monoxide Class Action Suit Filed Against Baltimore Westin Hotel
Last Updated on June 27, 2017
A class action lawsuit has been filed against the Baltimore Washington Airport (BWI) Westin Hotel alleging troubles with laundry room equipment are to blame for 400 guests and workers falling ill due to carbon monoxide exposure.
Firefighters evacuated the hotel last Sunday and found “dangerously high levels” of carbon monoxide on every floor.
“I felt like I had weights on my legs. It felt like I was just dragging,” Merlitha McKisset, who stayed on the third floor the weekend of the incident, told CBS Baltimore. McKisset added she still feels the effects of the carbon monoxide in the form of headaches and a burning sensation. “I still don’t feel like I’m quite up to par. I feel like I have the flu almost.”
Firefighters evacuated the hotel last Sunday and found “dangerously high levels” of carbon monoxide on every floor. According to the suit, the source of the carbon monoxide leak was a water heater that failed to properly vent the fumes outside. The plaintiffs in the suit, McKisset and other Westin guests that weekend, are claiming the hotel’s negligence is to blame for the potentially fatal fumes leak.
“When they offer a room to rent, they have a duty to make sure that the hotel is safe,” the plaintiffs’ attorney said. “In this situation, we believe they breached that duty because they weren’t taking care of the venting system in the laundry.”
According to CBS Baltimore, every guest who stayed at the Westin Hotel near BWI will be contacted and could possibly join the class action.
