Actos Bladder Cancer Warning Released by FDA
Last Updated on June 27, 2017
In a press release dated June 15th, the FDA announced a possible link between prescription drug Actos and bladder cancer. After an analysis of the first half of an ongoing 10-year study, results showed that patients with the longest exposure to pioglitazone and those taking the highest doses of the drug had an increased risk of developing bladder cancer. The FDA’s announcement will require manufacturers of pioglitazone-containing medicines to add information about the potential cancer risks to the “Warnings and Precautions” sections of the drug’s label. While the FDA has not halted use of the drug, both France and Germany suspended Actos sales based on studies conducted in Europe.
The FDA announced a possible link between prescription drug Actos and bladder cancer.
In the US, about 2.3 million patients filed a prescription for Actos from January 2010 through October 2010. The popular pioglitazone-based medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to improve control of blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. According to the FDA, patients who are currently being treated with Actos should contact their doctor if they notice blood in the urine or other signs of bladder cancer and to talk to their healthcare professional if they have any concerns regarding pioglitazone. However, it is important that patients do not make any changes in your diabetes treatment without first consulting your healthcare provider.
If you or a loved one has taken Actos and developed bladder cancer, you may be entitled to compensation. You may be able to recover the cost of medical bills, in addition to damages for pain and suffering and lost wages.
