Beneful “Kibble” Foods May Contain Toxins That Harm Dogs, Lawsuit Claims
Earlier this year, plaintiff Frank Lucido filed a lawsuit in California accusing Nestle Purina of selling pet food that can kill or seriously injure dogs. According to the complaint, certain PurinaBeneful brand dog foods contain substances known by the FDA to be harmful to certain animals and 3,000 dog owners have already complained online about dogs that became sick or died after eating the products. The lawsuit cites several customers’ online complaints [sic throughout]:
“After opening a new bag of Playful Life by Beneful my dog was horribly sick. He was vomiting, diarrhea, lethargic, wheezing and couldn't walk or eat. We rushed him to the vet where he was put on steroids, IV to re-hydrate and antibiotics. He almost died. He was there for four days…This past Monday we started him back on Beneful (the same bag). He was worse than before in just hours. We got him to the hospital and the vet got him on an IV and flushed his system. He was sure it was this Lot of food.”

“We ran out of dog food one day and my husband brought home a bag of Beneful Healthy Fiesta...My 5 year old sharpei ate half a bowl and the next morning was kinda mopey looking. I came home from work that night and he was throwing up bile everywhere. We tried giving him water and he wouldn't even drink. The next morning I found my dog dead. Up until the day this food was given to him, he was a lively and happy dog. I attribute his death to this horrible dog food that is still being sold.”

Which Purina Products Are Affected?
The lawsuit claims the following dry “kibble” products are harmful to dogs:
- Purina Beneful Healthy Weight
- Purina Beneful Original
- Purina Beneful Incredibites
- Purina Beneful Healthy Growth for Puppies
- Purina Beneful Healthy Smile
- Purina Beneful Healthy Fiesta
- Purina Beneful Healthy Radiance
- Purina Beneful Playful Life
According to the lawsuit, Purina Beneful dog foods sold within the last four years are all potentially dangerous for dogs to eat.
What Is Wrong with the Dog Food?
The lawsuit claims that certain Purina Beneful “kibble” products contain ingredients that are toxic to animals if ingested. These ingredients are:
Propylene glycol, an automotive antifreeze ingredient known to be poisonous to cats and dogs. The ingredient is added by Nestle to help the food retain its moisture. The FDA currently bans the use of propylene glycol in cat foods – something, the lawsuit says, Purina should be well aware of, considering they also make cat food.
Mycotoxins, a group of toxins produced by fungus grown on grain. Grain is a primary ingredient in Beneful and independent consumer testing by The Association for Truth in Pet Food found dangerous levels of mycotoxins in Beneful Original.
Pet owners have reportedly noticed the following symptoms in their dogs after feeding them Beneful “kibble” products:
- Lethargy
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Dehydration
- Weight loss
- Seizures
- Bloating
- Bladder stones
- Internal bleeding of the stomach and other organs
- Liver malfunction and failure
- Kidney failure
- Death
If your dog suffered from these injuries or died after eating Purina Beneful pet food, you may be able to take part in a class action lawsuit..
