The 59-page Horne data breach lawsuit says the Mississippi-based business consulting and accounting firm fell victim to a cyberattack in which an unauthorized third party gained access to certain files stored in its computer network. Per the suit, the unauthorized access, which reportedly occurred between December 8 and December 13, 2021, may have exposed individuals’ names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, medical treatment data and health insurance information.
According to the case, Horne was legally obligated to protect the personal information it keeps from falling into the hands of cybercriminals. However, despite its duty, the defendant failed to implement proper cybersecurity protocols and stored the sensitive data unencrypted and unredacted in its computer systems, the complaint alleges.
The plaintiff, a former patient at one of Horne’s healthcare clients, says he received notice from the defendant in mid-February 2024 informing him that his private data had been compromised in the breach. Like other victims, the man now faces an ongoing threat of identity theft and fraud as a result of the unauthorized disclosure of his confidential information, the filing charges.
In addition, the data breach lawsuit claims that Horne’s notice letter was unreasonably delayed and omitted crucial details about the incident, including how cybercriminals gained access to the computer network and what steps are being taken to improve data security in the future.
Without this information, victims’ ability to mitigate the consequences of the data breach is substantially reduced, the case argues.
The lawsuit looks to represent anyone in the United States whose private information was maintained on the computer systems that were compromised in the Horne data breach.
