According to the 59-page Advantis Global data breach lawsuit, an investigation into the incident determined that between August 18 and October 24, 2022, an unauthorized third party gained access to the IT staffing agency’s email system and acquired certain emails that contained personal information. Per the suit, the private data exposed in the Advantis Global breach included names and Social Security numbers.
The case contends that Advantis Global negligently failed to maintain adequate cybersecurity protocols to safeguard the employee data, which the company allegedly stored unencrypted and “in a condition vulnerable to cyberattacks.”
In addition, the complaint argues that the distribution of the Advantis Global notice letter in December 2023 was unreasonably delayed. To make matters worse, the notice lacked crucial details about how cybercriminals gained access to the system and what steps are being taken to safeguard stored data in the future, the filing claims.
“Without these details, [the plaintiff’s] and Class Members’ ability to mitigate the harms resulting from the data breach is severely diminished,” the suit adds.
The data breach lawsuit charges that Advantis Global, in light of the frequency of cyberattacks in recent years and the current emphasis on data security, should have understood the risks of a data breach and taken commensurate measures to protect employees’ sensitive information.
Like other victims, the plaintiff, a former employee residing in Michigan, now faces a lifelong threat of identity theft and fraud as a result of the company’s negligence, the case alleges.
The lawsuit looks to represent anyone in the United States whose personal information was impacted as a result of the data breach announced by Advantis Global in December 2023.
