According to the 33-page complaint, laboratory testing has shown that Selina Naturally’s Fine Ground Celtic Sea Salt and Light Grey Celtic Sea Salt contain significant levels of lead and arsenic, both of which have been linked to a host of adverse health effects.
The lawsuit alleges defendant Celtic Ocean International, LLC has misled consumers into believing its sea salt products are healthy, high quality and made using good manufacturing practices. Indeed, the case contends that the company deceptively states that it has been “inspected and approved to meet quality standards,” despite labeling its product packages with assurances that the sea salt is “Doctor Recommended,” “Quality Certified,” and “100% responsibly sourced always,” among other alleged misrepresentations.
“The labels for each of these products give reasonable consumers the net impression that the Products are healthy and do not contain significant levels of heavy metals,” the suit says, noting that consumers such as the plaintiff, a California resident, would not have bought the Celtic Sea Salt had they been known the products were contaminated with lead and arsenic.
Per the complaint, lab results revealed that the sea salt has about 0.69 micrograms of lead per serving, which exceeds the maximum allowable daily dose level of 0.5 micrograms established under California regulations. What’s more, an individual following the American Heart Association’s daily sodium intake recommendation would consume 1.06 micrograms of lead per day if the Selina Naturally Fine Ground Celtic Sea Salt or Light Grey Celtic Sea Salt was their salt of choice, the case alleges.
The filing stresses that, according to several public health authorities, there is no “safe” level of lead exposure. Contact with even small amounts of the heavy metal can cause kidney damage, cancer, anemia, cardiovascular disease, neurological issues and more, the suit shares.
Fine Ground Celtic Sea Salt and Light Grey Celtic Sea Salt also tested positive for 140 ppb of arsenic, the case claims. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that consuming arsenic at levels above 10 ppb will increase the risk of long-term or chronic health problems, such as cancer, impaired brain development and immune system issues.
The sea salt lawsuit looks to represent anyone who purchased Selina Naturally Fine Ground Celtic Sea Salt or Light Grey Celtic Sea Salt for personal use in the United States during the applicable statute of limitations period.
