Welltok Data Breach:
Lawsuit Investigation
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed in light of the data breach affecting Welltok.
As part of their investigation, they need to hear from individuals who received a notice stating they were impacted.
Welltok, a company that offers patient communication services to health plan providers, was alerted to a compromise of its MOVEit Transfer server due to software vulnerabilities announced by the developer of the tool. After investigating with the help of cybersecurity specialists, the company discovered that an unauthorized actor had accessed the server on May 30, 2023 and exfiltrated data. On August 26, 2023, it was determined that personal information relating to certain individuals was housed on the server at the time.
Affected information includes names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and, in some cases, Social Security numbers, Medicare/Medicaid ID numbers, and health insurance information. Additionally, some health information such as provider names, prescription names, or treatment codes may have been included for other individuals.
According to an online announcement about the incident, Welltok said it will be providing notice to those affected by the breach on behalf of the following organizations:
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and Blue Plus
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina
- Corewell Health
- Faith Regional Health Services
- Hospital & Medical Foundation of Paris, Inc. dba Horizon Health
- Mass General Brigham Health Plan
- Priority Health
- St. Bernards Healthcare
- Sutter Health
- Trane Technologies Company LLC and/or group health plans sponsored by Trane Technologies Company LLC or Trane U.S. Inc.
- The group health plans of Stanford Health Care, of Stanford Health Care, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley, Stanford Medicine Partners, and Packard Children’s Health Alliance
- The Guthrie Clinic
If your information was exposed in the breach, attorneys want to hear from you. You may be able to start a class action lawsuit to recover compensation for loss of privacy, time spent dealing with the breach, out-of-pocket costs, and more.
A successful case could also force Welltok to ensure it takes proper steps to protect the information it was entrusted with.
