On October 30, 2024, Rockford Gastroenterology Associates, a medical clinic in Illinois, reported a "hacking/IT incident" affecting 147,253 individuals to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
According to a notice posted on Rockford Gastroenterology Associates' website, the cyberattack resulted in unauthorized access to certain files within the provider's network. An investigation revealed that while the electronic health records system remained secure, some unstructured data files were accessed by an unauthorized party around December 16, 2023. Third-party specialists were then hired to scrutinize the data compromised in the Rockford Gastroenterology Associates data breach.
This review, completed by September 4, 2024, found that the data contained personal and health information of patients. Rockford Gastroenterology Associates says it is now working to notify affected individuals directly but has not yet stated the specific types of data exposed.
