Ohio Lottery Data Breach:
Lawsuit Investigation
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed in light of the Ohio Lottery data breach.
As part of their investigation, they need to hear from individuals who received a notice stating they were impacted.
The cybersecurity breach occurred on the Ohio Lottery’s internal office network around December 24, 2023, allowing for the unauthorized access and exposure of data maintained by the organization. In response to the breach, the Ohio Lottery launched an investigation with the assistance of external cybersecurity experts. It was confirmed on April 5, 2024 that certain files containing personal information had been accessed without authorization.
The Ohio Lottery data breach reportedly exposed names and Social Security numbers and affected 538,959 people. SecurityWeek.com reports, however, that ransomware group DragonForce, which took credit for the attack, claims to have stolen more than 1.5 million records containing employee and player data, including not only Social Security numbers but also email addresses, mailing addresses, dates of birth and winnings. The publication notes that the group first claimed to have stolen 3 million records.
The Ohio Lottery, which is run by the Ohio Lottery Commission, offers scratch tickets, classic lottery and other games.
If your information was exposed in the breach, attorneys want to hear from you. You may be able to start a class action lawsuit to recover compensation for loss of privacy, time spent dealing with the breach, out-of-pocket costs, and more.
A successful case could also force Ohio Lottery to ensure it takes proper steps to protect the information it was entrusted with.
