NYU Data Breach:
Lawsuit Investigation
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed in light of the NYU data breach.
As part of their investigation, they need to hear from individuals who applied to New York University (NYU).
On Saturday, March 22, 2025, hackers reportedly gained control of New York University’s website for about two hours, exposing the personal information of over 3 million applicants dating back to 1989. Reports indicate that the leaked data from the NYU hack, contained in four CSV files that were openly accessible, included names, test scores, majors, zip codes, demographic data, family member details, financial aid information, citizenship status, and Common Application information such as records of rejected and Early Decision applicants.
During the New York University data breach, a defaced webpage on the NYU website reportedly displayed purported average SAT scores, ACT scores, and GPAs for the 2024–25 admissions cycle for Asian, white, Hispanic and Black students, alongside accusations that the data reflected continued disparities following the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling against affirmative action. A Reddit user reported the breach around 10:30 a.m.
The NYU website was restored by noon. In a statement, NYU spokesperson John Beckman confirmed that the IT team responded immediately to “malicious hackers” and that law enforcement has been alerted.
If your information was exposed in the breach, attorneys want to hear from you. You may be able to start a class action lawsuit to recover compensation for loss of privacy, time spent dealing with the breach, out-of-pocket costs, and more.
A successful case could also force NYU to ensure it takes proper steps to protect the information it was entrusted with.
