National Public Data: Possible Hack?
Lawsuit Investigation
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed in light of claims from hackers that they stole a large trove of data from Florida background check firm National Public Data.
Global online enterprise technology news publication The Register has reported that the hackers have threatened to leak nearly 3 billion personal records they say were obtained from the firm.
According to the news report, a hacker group known as USDoD, believed to be acting as a broker for the data, put up for sale a massive file said to contain 2.9 billion rows for the price of $3.5 million. The database, which may contain duplicate entries, is alleged by the hackers to include names, address histories and Social Security numbers of people who lived in the United States, some of whom are deceased or may now reside in the UK or Canada, The Register reports.
Information security watchers at vx-underground claimed in a tweet that the allegedly stolen data in the file is "real and accurate" and does not contain information of those who used a "data opt-out service."
