Kaiser Permanente Data Breach:
Legal Investigation
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether legal action can be taken in light of the Kaiser Permanente data breach.
On April 12, 2024, the health insurance arm of Kaiser Permanente, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) a data breach affecting 13,400,000 individuals.
TechCrunch reports that the company will be notifying "millions of current and former members" of the breach, which involved the sharing of patient data with third-party advertisers including Microsoft, Google and X via tracking tools. According to the article, the compromised data may include member names, IP addresses and how members interacted with the company's websites and mobile apps.
Companies that are covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) are required to report data breaches involving protected health information to affected individuals and the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
The attorneys are now gathering affected Kaiser Foundation Health Plan patients to take legal action via mass arbitration, which is different from a class action lawsuit. If your information was exposed in the Kaiser Permanente data breach, you may be entitled to hundreds of dollars.
