Hertz, Cleo Security Incident: What Happened?
In April 2025, The Hertz Corporation began notifying consumers about a data breach involving vendor Cleo Communications US, LLC, which provides a file transfer platform used by the car rental company. This incident potentially impacted the personal information of certain individuals associated with the Hertz, Dollar, and Thrifty brands.
On February 10, 2025, Hertz identified that data was acquired by an unauthorized party that exploited vulnerabilities in Cleo’s platform in October and December 2024. Hertz analyzed the data breach to determine its scope and identify affected individuals, completing the assessment on April 2, 2025.
The exposed data may include names, contact details, birth dates, credit card and driver’s license information, and details related to workers’ compensation claims. A limited number of individuals may have also had their Social Security or government ID numbers, passport information, Medicare or Medicaid IDs (associated with workers' comp claims), or injury-related vehicle accident information compromised.
Individuals who had their information exposed in the data breach involving Hertz and Cleo are now receiving notice by mail.
