As part of their investigation, they need to hear from individuals who received a notice stating they were impacted.
Trucking company Estes Express Lines has begun notifying affected individuals of a data security incident that took place on October 1, 2023. The company discovered that an unauthorized individual gained access to a portion of its IT network and deployed ransomware. Following the recommended advice from the FBI and financial regulators, Estes chose not to pay the ransom.
A subsequent investigation revealed that the unauthorized individual accessed and extracted certain data from the affected system, which may have included Social Security numbers.
Estes reported to the Maine attorney general's office that the breach affected 21,184 individuals.
