Settlements for Bayer Yasmin Contraceptives

Bayer has begun settling lawsuits alleging that its Yaz and Yasmin line of contraceptives cause potentially fatal blood clots in women who use the medication, according to various reports. To date, Bayer has resolved 651 individual Yaz / Yasmin lawsuits paying a total of $142 million to settle cases alleging that its birth control pills caused two forms of potentially fatal blood clots - deep vein thromboembolism and pulmonary embolism. These settlements average to about $218,000 per case, compensating women for medical bills and other damages. Experts reportedly estimate that Bayer will be ordered to pay as much as $2.65 billion to settle all pending Yaz/Yasmin lawsuits.

Birth Control Pills and Blood Clots

Until recently, Yaz and Yasmin were two of the most widely purchased oral contraceptives in the United States. Not surprisingly, the drugs were also enormously lucrative for Bayer, bringing in over $1.58 billion dollars for the pharmaceutical giant in 2010 alone. However, recent research discovered that Yaz and Yasmin and other birth control pills containing a synthetic hormone known as drospirenone can allegedly cause a number of serious health issues when ingested. Drospirenone can triple the risk of blood clots and facilitate other adverse reactions such as strokes and heart attacks, according to various reports. In light of these discoveries, an advisory board tasked with examining the safety of Bayer’s products decided that the labeling on Yaz and Yasmin was insufficient in properly warning consumers of the dangers associated with the product. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in response to the advisory board’s findings, announced a revision to the Yaz and Yasmin labeling which includes warnings about the heightened risk of blood clots and the other potential side effects.

The recent Yaz and Yasmin settlements come just days after the FDA label revision was announced and experts expect many more lawsuits to be filed against Bayer in the coming weeks.
