- Additional Details
- Approximately 4.2 million vehicles are affected by the floor mat recalls, and approximately 2.3 million vehicles are affected by the gas pedal recall. Some models are subject to both recall actions.
- Date
- Toyota announced two recalls, one in November 2009 and one in January 2010, to fix an issue with the gas pedal becoming caught on the floor mat. A separate recall in January 2010 involved gas pedals that can stick on their own without any interference from the floor mat.
In November, Toyota issued a recall in order to fix a design flaw that could cause the gas pedal to get caught on the edge of the removable floor mat. When the gas pedal got stuck on the floor mat, it could lead to uncontrollable acceleration of the vehicle. A second recall was issued in January that added to the list of vehicles that have the potential to experience this problem. In all, approximately 4.2 million vehicles were affected by this recall. The following models were involved in the recall:
- 2007 – 2010 Camry
- 2005 – 2010 Avalon
- 2004 – 2009 Prius
- 2010 Tacoma
- 2007 – 2010 Tundra
- 2009-2010 Venza
- 2008-2010 Highlander
- 2009-2010 Corolla
- 2009-2010 Matrix
- 2009 - 2010 Pontiac Vibe
- 2007 – 2010 Lexus ES350
- 2006 – 2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350
On January 21, 2010, Toyota announced that it would recall approximately 2.3 million cars due to a problem with the accelerator pedal sticking. In rare cases, the accelerator pedal may become stuck in a partially depressed position or return to the idle position slowly. This can cause unintended acceleration and lead to unsafe conditions for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. According to Toyota, this problem can occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn. Approximately 2.3 million vehicles are affected by this recall. In addition, until Toyota has developed a solution for this problem, sales of the affected vehicles have been suspended. This recall affects the following Toyota vehicles:
- 2009-2010 RAV4
- 2009-2010 Corolla
- 2009-2010 Matrix
- 2005-2010 Avalon
- Some 2007-2010 Camrys
- 2010 Highlander
- 2007-2010 Tundra
- 2008-2010 Sequoia
Although no Lexus or Scion vehicles were included in the gas pedal recall, approximately 1.7 million Toyota vehicles are subject to both separate recall actions.
Individuals who drive a Toyota car and experience any sticking or slowness of the gas pedal should stop driving the car and bring it to a Toyota dealer immediately.
