The shrimp industry is a vital part of the economy in Gulf Coast states such as Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. However, shrimpers are currently facing significant economic losses as a result of the BP oil spill. Like other businesses and workers that depend upon the Gulf of Mexico's natural resources, shrimp harvesting companies and shrimp fishermen are faced with lost revenue, lost wages, and an uncertain future in the aftermath of this environmental disaster. Although the long-term effects of the oil spill are unknown, Southern Shrimp Alliance Executive Director Jon Williams has stated that it could be "one year, two years or 40 years" before the Gulf shrimp population is fully restored.
If you work in the shrimping business and lost profits or wages due to the oil spill, you may be entitled to financial compensation for your losses.
Effect of the Gulf Oil Spill on Shrimp Fishermen
The Gulf Coast region is one of the most productive fisheries in the United States, and the large shrimp population there has made it a prime location for commercial shrimp harvesting businesses. These businesses employ thousands of shrimp fishermen who harvest the shrimp, providing a steady source of jobs for residents. In addition to providing economic support for many Gulf Coast families, shrimp also has a significant place in the region’s culture. Distinctive local cuisine, such as shrimp gumbo and shrimp jambalaya, is enjoyed by residents and tourists alike.
It appears that the shrimping industry will be particularly hard hit by the BP oil spill because the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in April coincided with the beginning of shrimp season. Fishing ground closures and the massive oil slick that is spreading through the waters of the Gulf of Mexico will make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for shrimpers to harvest this year's catch. The long-term effects of the oil spill on the shrimp population in the Gulf remain to be seen, but it may take years for the shrimping industry to recover from the damage done by the BP oil spill.
