The commercial fishing industry, a key component of the Gulf Coast economy, is now facing significant financial losses as a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion and the subsequent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This industry depends upon the natural bounty of fish in the Gulf in order to provide jobs for local residents and turn a profit for business owners, but the ecosystem of the entire region is now at risk due to the spreading oil slick.
If you are a commercial fisherman who lost profits due to the oil spill, you may be entitled to financial compensation under the Oil Pollution Act of 1990.
Fishermen, Boat Owners Incur Lost Wages Due to Oil Spill
Fishing ground closures resulting from the oil spill have left many involved in the commercial fishing industry unable to work, including fishermen, boat owners, anglers, captains, deckhands. These employees are now facing lost wages and other hardships. Likewise, with no fish to sell to restaurants and grocery stores, commercial fishing businesses are facing lost revenues. Unfortunately, it appears that their troubles will not be short-lived. The fish and marine life populations may take years to recover from the negative ecological effects of the BP oil spill, and the commercial fishing industry will be unable to bounce back until this happens.
While it remains to be seen how long the Gulf Coast waters will continue to feel the negative effects of the oil spill, the jobs and livelihoods of many commercial fishermen in the region continue to be at risk. If you are involved in the Gulf of Mexico commercial fishing industry and you have experienced financial losses as a result of the oil spill, you may be entitled to compensation. Several Gulf of Mexico oil spill lawsuits have already been filed on behalf of commercial fishermen and others who have been negatively affected by the oil spill.
